Additional Info

Sailung Overnight Hike difficulty

  • Hike distance: The Sailung Overnight Hike covers approximately 10–12 km (6–7 miles) round trip, including the hike to the summit of Sailung Danda. The hike is designed to be completed in 2 days, making it ideal for a short yet rewarding hill adventure. Daily hiking typically takes 4–6 hours, depending on your pace and rest stops.
  • Difficulty level and terrain: The Sailung hike is considered moderate, suitable for beginners and casual hikers with a reasonable level of fitness. The trail passes through lush forests, terraced farmlands, and rolling meadows with gentle to moderately steep ascents. The route is well-marked, and the terrain is not technically challenging, making it an excellent option for families, friends, and solo adventurers.
  • Altitude sickness: Sailung Danda reaches an elevation of approximately 3,146 meters (10,322 ft). While this altitude is not extremely high, some hikers may feel mild shortness of breath or fatigue during the ascent. There is minimal risk of altitude sickness for most participants, but it’s important to listen to your body, pace yourself, and stay hydrated.
  • Preventive measures: To avoid altitude sickness during your hiking adventure, ensure you stay hydrated by drinking ample water and steer clear of alcohol and smoking. Prioritize acclimatization by adhering to the suggested schedule, and promptly communicate any discomfort to your guide for optimal safety. For more detailed guidance on altitude-related precautions, visit our website for expert tips and advice.
  • Previous hiking/trekking experience: No prior  trekking/hiking experience is required. The Sailung Overnight Hike is beginner-friendly, though being in reasonable physical condition will make the experience more enjoyable. Our guides provide support and tips to help you navigate the trail safely.
  • Hike preparation: Prepare with light cardiovascular exercise, brisk walking, or stair climbing in the weeks leading up to the hike. Pack essentials including a backpack, water bottle, snacks, camera, and appropriate clothing. Familiarize yourself with local customs to fully enjoy interactions with the Tamang communities along the route.

The best time to do the Sailung Overnight Hike in Nepal

  • Spring: From March to May, Sailung Danda comes alive with vibrant rhododendron blossoms and lush green hills. The weather is mild, skies are generally clear, and the trail is dry, making spring the perfect time for hiking and enjoying panoramic views of the Himalayas.
  • Autumn: September to November is another excellent season for the Sailung hike. Expect crisp mountain air, colorful landscapes, and clear skies, ideal for sunrise and sunset photography. Trails can be busier during this peak season, but the views are truly spectacular.
  • Summer/monsoon: June to August is not ideal due to frequent rainfall, slippery trails, and occasional landslides. The lush greenery is beautiful, but hiking can be challenging, so this season is recommended only for experienced hikers comfortable with wet conditions.
  • Winter: From December to February, Sailung offers a quiet and peaceful escape with fewer visitors. Temperatures can be cold, especially early in the morning and at the summit, but clear skies often provide stunning views of the snow-capped Himalayan range, making winter an attractive option for adventurers prepared for chilly weather.

Accommodation and Meals

  • Rooms and washrooms: Lodging during the Sailung Overnight Hike is simple and cozy, usually in local guest houses or homestays. Rooms often have twin beds with clean linens. Some places may have private bathrooms, while others offer shared washrooms. Since heating is limited, carrying a sleeping bag is recommended for warmth.
  • Hot showers: Hot showers may be available at certain guest houses, but availability is not guaranteed. Most lower-elevation lodges are more likely to have hot water. Carrying body wipes is advisable to stay fresh during the hike.
  • Charging: Some lodges provide charging facilities for phones and cameras, often for a small fee. Bringing a power bank is a smart precaution in case electricity is unavailable.
  • WiFi: Internet access is limited. Some lodges may offer WiFi, but connections are often slow or unreliable. Consider purchasing a Nepalese SIM card for mobile data coverage during the hike.
  • Breakfast: Typically includes tea or coffee, bread, pancakes, eggs, porridge, or local Nepali dishes.
  • Lunch and dinner: Options include dal bhat, noodles, momo, thukpa, local vegetables, and other simple Nepali or continental dishes. Meals are freshly prepared using local ingredients and provide plenty of energy for hiking.
  • Drinking water and beverages: Boiled or filtered water is available at most lodges for a small fee. Tea, coffee, soft drinks, and occasional local alcoholic beverages can also be purchased. Prices may be slightly higher at higher elevations due to transportation difficulties.

Additional Information

  • Travel insurance: Having adequate travel insurance is essential for embarking on the Sailung Overnight Hike. Ensure it includes provisions for emergency air evacuation and medical expenses. Given the hike's remote location with limited medical facilities, having comprehensive travel insurance ensures prompt rescue and assistance during unforeseen events or medical emergencies.
  • Passport and visa: Before traveling to Nepal, ensure your passport remains valid for a minimum of six months from your entry date. Additionally, you have the option to secure a tourist visa either upon landing at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or from the Nepalese Embassy or Consulate in your nation. Always review the current visa requirements for Nepal before determining your visa acquisition method.
  • Money exchange: The currency in Nepal is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR). In Thamel, you'll find banks and currency exchange outlets offering favorable exchange rates. Additionally, ATMs in the area generally accept international cards for cash withdrawals. It's important to keep in mind, though, that the Sailung Hike route is devoid of ATMs. Therefore, ensure you withdraw sufficient funds in Kathmandu before embarking on your hike.
  • Tips: In Nepal, it's customary to tip your guides and porters as a gesture of gratitude for their dedication. Although there's no set amount, it's advised to tip based on the quality of service you receive from guides, porters, and lodge personnel.
  • Luggage: Opt for minimal luggage and utilize the hotel's storage for extra bags during your hike. Ensure your duffel bag remains under 10 kg and your backpack under 5 kg.
  • Personal expense: While our Sailung Overnight Hike package covers transportation, accommodation, meals and expenses of guides and porters as per the itinerary, you still need to budget additional money for personal expenses. These are tips, travel insurance, international flight fares, shopping, extra snacks and beverages, etc.
