Mardi Himal Trek Difficulties

Trek Distance

The Mardi Himal trek typically covers a distance of around 41 kilometers or 25 miles, depending on the specific itinerary and side trips. This distance is usually covered over 7–10 days of trekking. Every day, you will cover around 9 kilometers (5.5 miles) on average by trekking for a minimum of 6 hours.

Difficulty level and terrain

Mardi Himal Trek encompasses a blend of uphill and downhill terrains, striking a balance without being excessively strenuous. Beginning amidst sub-tropical forests, the route gradually transitions through alpine woodlands, leading trekkers across picturesque meadows.

Altitude sickness

By prioritizing safety, proper acclimatization, and attentive monitoring of symptoms, you can reduce the risk of altitude sickness and enjoy a rewarding trekking experience in the breathtaking landscapes of the Mardi Himal region. Always consult with a healthcare provider or trekking professional for personalized advice and guidance tailored to your individual needs and conditions.

Preventive measures

To mitigate altitude sickness risks, prioritize hydration by drinking ample water and refraining from alcohol consumption or smoking during the trek. Adopt a steady pace rather than rushing, adhere to the advised acclimatization schedule, and promptly notify your guide if you experience any discomfort or symptoms.

Previous trekking experience

While prior trekking experience can enhance your Mardi Himal Trek, it's not a prerequisite. Even without prior trekking background, embarking on the Mardi Trek is entirely feasible. With thorough preparation and readiness, there's no need for concern; you can confidently undertake this adventure.

Trek preparation

It's essential to assess and enhance your physical readiness. Engage in consistent cardiovascular workouts and focus on strengthening your leg muscles. Additionally, pack versatile clothing suitable for fluctuating weather patterns, encompassing layers to combat chilly nights and accommodate warmer daytime temperatures. Familiarizing yourself with local customs and culture will facilitate meaningful interactions with community members throughout your journey.

The best time to do the Mardi Himal Trek trek in Nepal

Spring

Spring, spanning from March to May, stands out as a prime period for the Mardi Himal trek. This season unveils a valley adorned with colorful rhododendron blossoms and verdant landscapes. Enjoy stable weather, mild temperatures, and clear skies, rendering it an optimal time for an enriching trekking experience.

Autumn

From September to November, autumn emerges as a prime season for trekking in the Mardi Himal region. This time period, which is characterized by pleasant weather and primarily clear skies, gives hikers the chance to enjoy the energizing mountain air amid the vibrant fall foliage colors. However, it's worth noting that the allure of autumn attracts a significant influx of trekkers, resulting in busier trails.

Summer/Monsoon

The period from June to August, encompassing summer and the monsoon season, is generally not advisable for the Mardi Himal Trek. During these months, the region witnesses substantial rainfall, leading to muddy and treacherous trails. Additionally, occurrences of landslides and encounters with leeches increase, making trekking conditions less favorable and potentially hazardous due to unpredictable weather patterns.

Winter

From December to February, winter presents an alternative yet feasible period for embarking on the Mardi Himal trek. During this season, the trails glisten under a blanket of snow, and temperatures notably decrease, particularly at elevated altitudes. Nevertheless, for those equipped to brave the cold and seeking a serene journey away from the crowds, winter bestows a distinctive and tranquil trekking experience.

Accommodation and Meals

Rooms and Washrooms

Accommodations along the Mardi Himal Trek route are basic tea houses and lodges. They have small rooms with twin beds and clean bedding. Some places may offer you a private washroom, but most of the accommodation has a shared washroom. Single rooms are available in some places. As there is no heating system in the rooms, we recommend carrying a sleeping bag with you.

Charging

Charging electronic devices, such as phones and cameras, is typically possible at most lodges and teahouses along the Mardi Trail. It's recommended to bring a power bank as a backup. When charging in a teahouse, where devices are commonly charged in shared spaces like dining halls, take care to avoid misplacing your charging device among the various devices by being vigilant.

WiFi

WiFi is available in most places along the trek, but the connection may be slow, unreliable, and may come with additional charges. It is advisable to acquire a Nepali SIM for data usage during the trek, as there will be no reliable network coverage in the dense forest after a certain point. Nepal Telecom SIMs work well until Mardi High Camp, beyond which only a specific location provides network coverage.

Breakfast

You can anticipate a selection that typically includes tea or coffee along with a variety of foods like toast, sandwiches, Gurung bread, pancakes, apple-infused porridge, hash brown potatoes, eggs cooked in various ways, and muesli.

Lunch and Dinner

While embarking on the Mardi Himal trek, you can look forward to a diverse array of lunch and dinner choices. The menu typically features a range of traditional Nepali dishes such as dal bhat (lentil soup with rice), noodles, pasta, momo (dumplings), curries, burgers, chapati, chilies, thukpa (a noodle soup), pizza, and various other offerings. The dining options at every dining establishment offer a rich and gratifying selection, catering to a variety of tastes and preferences.

Drinking Water and Beverages

Along the trekking route, you can find bottled and filtered water for sale at teahouses and lodges. Most teahouses provide a variety of hot beverages, like tea and coffee. It is advisable to bring a reusable water bottle, and there are water purification options such as tablets and drops to guarantee a safe and sustainable water supply during the trek. Choosing hot beverages not only adds comfort but also helps counter the cool mountain climate. Stay informed about the latest updates on water availability and safety by consulting local guides or teahouse owners.

Additional Information

Travel Insurance

It is crucial to have travel insurance when embarking on the Mardi Himal Trek. Your insurance should cover emergency air evacuation and medical expenses. Since you'll be trekking in a remote area with minimal medical facilities, having travel insurance guarantees swift rescue assistance in case of unexpected circumstances or medical emergencies.

Passport and Visa Information

Prior to your arrival in Nepal, verify that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your entry date. You can choose to obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu or through the Nepalese Embassy or consulate office in your home country. It is recommended to confirm the current visa status for Nepal and carefully evaluate the available options before determining your preferred method of obtaining a visa.

Currency Exchange

The official currency used in Nepal is the Nepalese rupee (NPR). In Thamel and Pokhara, there are banks and currency exchange centers that offer advantageous exchange rates. Furthermore, numerous ATMs in these locations accept international cards, enabling you to withdraw cash conveniently. However, it's crucial to note that there are no ATMs along the Mardi Himal trekking route beyond Pokhara. Therefore, it is recommended to withdraw an adequate amount of funds in Kathmandu or Pokhara to cover your expenses during the trek.

Luggage

Keep your luggage weight to a minimum and make use of the hotel's locker room to store any additional suitcases while trekking. Ensure that your duffel bag does not surpass a weight limit of 10 kg, and keep your backpack under a weight limit of 5 kg.

Tip

It is a common practice to express gratitude to your guide and porters by tipping for their dedicated service. While there is no fixed amount, it is recommended to tip guides, porters, and staff according to the level of service they have provided.

Personal Expenses

While our Mardi Himal Trekking package covers transportation, accommodation, meals, permits, and the fees for guides and porters as specified in the itinerary, it's crucial to budget extra funds for personal expenditures.
